How to Massage Your Breasts After Augmentation Surgery

If you’ve had breast augmentation with smooth-type implants, post-operative massage is an important part of your recovery and long-term results. Proper massage can help prevent capsular contracture, ensure natural movement, and keep your implants soft.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to perform breast massage at home:

Step 1: Preparation

  • Wash your hands.

  • Use a moisturizing lotion or body oil to reduce friction and make the massage more comfortable.

  • Stand in front of a mirror to check your hand placement and movements.

Step 2: Circular Massage (Clockwise & Counterclockwise)

Place one hand above the breast and the other below.
Gently press the breast and move your hands in a circular motion around the implant:

  • First, massage in a clockwise direction.

  • Then, repeat the motion in a counterclockwise direction.

Spend about 2–3 minutes on each direction per side.

Step 3: Straight-Line Pressure Massage (12 Directions)

Imagine a clock face on your breast.
Use your fingers to gently push inward toward the center of the breast in 12 directions, from 1 o’clock to 12 o’clock.

  • Apply light but firm pressure.

  • Repeat on both breasts.

This helps to keep the implant pocket open and encourages a natural, soft shape.

Step 4: Duration & Frequency

  • Massage both breasts for 5–10 minutes each.

  • Follow your surgeon’s recommendations for when to start. This is usually a few days to a few weeks after surgery.

  • Continue daily for the duration advised by your doctor.

⚠️ Important Note: Not all implant types require massage. Always follow your surgeon’s specific instructions based on your surgery type and implant style.
