Before Surgery Checklist

At Least 1 Week Before Surgery

Stop Smoking

Do not smoke for at least 1 week before surgery and for at least 2 weeks after surgery.

Smoking and nicotine may reduce blood flow, delay wound healing, and increase the risk of wound problems and other complications.

This includes cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco, nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and other nicotine-containing products.

1 Week Before Surgery

Weight-Loss Medications (GLP-1 Medications)

Please inform Evita Clinic if you are currently using any weight-loss or diabetes medication such as Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, Zepbound®, Rybelsus®, or a similar GLP-1 medication.

These medications may slow stomach emptying and can affect anesthesia safety, even when surgery is performed under IV sedation.

Stop GLP-1 medications at least 1 week before surgery.

If you use the medication for diabetes, inform Evita Clinic and the physician who prescribed it before changing your medication schedule.

Before Surgery

Blood-Thinning Medications

Inform Evita Clinic if you are taking any medication that affects bleeding or blood clotting.

  • Aspirin
  • Plavix® (clopidogrel)
  • Warfarin or Coumadin®
  • Xarelto® (rivaroxaban)
  • Eliquis® (apixaban)
  • Pradaxa® (dabigatran)
  • Other anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications

Do not stop prescription blood-thinning medication on your own.

If it was prescribed by another physician, contact Evita Clinic in advance so that the medication schedule can be coordinated safely with the prescribing physician.

Before Surgery

Medical Conditions, Allergies, and Medications

Inform our medical staff before surgery about all medical conditions, allergies, current medications, and previous medication reactions.

Important medical conditions include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease or abnormal heart rhythm
  • Asthma or other respiratory disease
  • Sleep apnea
  • Bleeding or clotting disorders
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Seizure disorder
  • Previous surgeries
  • Previous anesthesia-related complications

Important allergies and previous reactions include:

  • Antibiotic allergies
  • Pain medication allergies
  • Anti-inflammatory medication allergies
  • Soybean allergy
  • Latex or adhesive allergy
  • Previous reactions to sedation or anesthesia

Also inform us about all prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbal medicines, weight-loss products, hormones, and dietary supplements.

Because IV sedation is used during surgery, accurate medical information is essential for selecting appropriate medications and reducing avoidable risks.

Before Surgery

Vitamins, Herbal Products, and Supplements

Some supplements may increase bleeding, interact with sedation medications, or affect blood pressure and blood glucose.

Inform Evita Clinic if you take products containing:

  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Ginseng
  • Garlic extract
  • Fish oil or high-dose omega-3
  • Vitamin E
  • St. John’s wort
  • Weight-loss or bodybuilding supplements
  • Other herbal products

Do not assume that a supplement is safe simply because it is described as natural. Follow the instructions provided by Evita Clinic.

Before Surgery

Plan Your Recovery

Arrange your work schedule, travel plans, and daily activities before surgery.

Light daily activity is generally possible within a few days, but strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and intense upper-body activity must be avoided during the initial recovery period.

You must return to Evita Clinic the day after surgery for your first postoperative check-up.

2–3 Days Before Surgery

Prepare the Surgical Area

Carefully shave the hair around the areolar and lower chest area approximately 2–3 days before surgery.

Do not shave on the day of surgery. Fresh cuts, irritation, or folliculitis may increase the risk of infection.

Do not apply body lotion, oil, deodorant, or other cosmetic products to the chest on the morning of surgery.

6 Hours Before Surgery

Begin Fasting

Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before surgery.

This includes:

  • Water
  • Coffee or tea
  • Juice or other beverages
  • Milk
  • Candy or chewing gum
  • Protein drinks or nutritional supplements

If you accidentally eat or drink during the fasting period, inform Evita Clinic immediately. Your surgery may need to be delayed or rescheduled.

On the Day of Surgery

  • Do not eat or drink anything during the required fasting period.
  • Remove all body piercings before arriving at the clinic.
  • Remove contact lenses before surgery.
  • Remove makeup and nail polish as instructed.
  • Bring your passport or another valid identification document.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on after surgery.
  • A front-opening shirt or zip-up top is recommended.
  • Do not bring valuable jewelry or unnecessary valuables.
  • Do not drive yourself to or from the clinic.
  • Arrive at the scheduled appointment time provided by our coordinator.
  • If you take medication for high blood pressure, inform our medical staff in advance. In most cases, it may be taken on the morning of surgery with only a small sip of water, but follow the specific instructions provided to you.
  • Bring any essential prescribed medication that may be needed during your stay at the clinic.

What to Expect After Surgery

  • Gynecomastia surgery at Evita Clinic is typically performed with tumescent local anesthesia and IV sedation.
  • The procedure usually takes approximately 2–3 hours, although the duration varies according to the surgical method and extent of treatment.
  • You will be monitored in the recovery area after surgery.
  • You will wear a compression garment after surgery.
  • Light walking and basic daily activity are generally possible during early recovery.
  • You must return to Evita Clinic the following day for your first postoperative check-up.
