Mondor’s Disease: What You Need to Know

Mondor’s disease is a rare but harmless condition that can sometimes occur after surgeries like gynecomastia or top surgery.
Although it may seem alarming at first, it is a temporary issue that resolves naturally over time.
At Evita Clinic, we want to help you understand this condition and reassure you that it is nothing to worry about.

What is Mondor’s Disease?

Mondor’s disease is a type of superficial thrombophlebitis, which is inflammation of a vein near the surface of the skin. It most commonly affects the thoracoepigastric vein in the chest or abdomen. Patients often notice a firm, cord-like structure under the skin, which may feel tender or cause mild discomfort. This is a natural reaction of the body and poses no long-term health risks.

Why Does it Happen After Surgery?

In procedures like gynecomastia or top surgery, where the mammary gland is removed, certain veins, such as the thoracoepigastric vein, may need to be tied off or coagulated to prevent bleeding. This can result in a small clot forming in the remaining portion of the vein, typically located under the chest or in the abdomen. This clot makes the vein feel firm and rope-like.

Over time, the body naturally absorbs the clot and the vein, causing the cord-like structure to disappear. This process is gradual and harmless.

Common Symptoms

  1. A feeling of discomfort, as if a cord-like structure is present in the chest.
  2. A pulling sensation when lifting the arms.
  3. A visible, slightly raised vein on the skin’s surface.

How to Speed Up Recovery

While Mondor’s disease resolves on its own, you can take steps to alleviate discomfort and support faster healing:

  • Gentle Massage: Lightly massaging the affected area can help.
  • Warm Compresses: Applying heat with a warm towel or hot pack reduces tension and promotes blood flow.
  • Light Stretching: Gentle stretches can relieve the pulling sensation.

When to Consult Your Doctor

In very rare cases, the affected area may show signs of inflammation, such as redness, warmth, or swelling. If this happens, contact your doctor.
At Evita Clinic, we are experienced in treating such rare occurrences with appropriate care, including antibiotics or, in exceptional cases, minor procedures.
