A thin capsule of scar tissue normally forms around every breast implant. Capsular contracture occurs when that capsule tightens more than expected and compresses the implant.
Possible signs include increasing firmness, a breast that sits higher or looks more rounded, a change in shape or symmetry, discomfort, or pain. The severity varies, and not everyone with breast implants develops capsular contracture.
Contact your surgeon if a breast becomes progressively hard, painful, or visibly different. Evaluation may include an examination and imaging when appropriate. Treatment depends on the severity and may range from observation to surgery involving the capsule and implant.
