Breast Augmentation Guide

Some breast augmentation patients may be instructed to perform implant mobility exercises during recovery. These exercises are designed to help maintain a soft and flexible implant pocket, encourage natural implant settling, and support long-term comfort and mobility.

Most Important Notes

  • Only perform implant massage if specifically instructed by your surgeon.
  • These exercises are generally intended for selected patients with submuscular implants.
  • Do not perform aggressive massage. Gentle controlled movement is more effective than excessive force.
  • If you experience severe pain, unusual swelling, or implant displacement, stop and contact Evita Clinic.
  • Always follow the individualized instructions provided by your surgeon.

Why Implant Mobility Exercises Are Recommended

Following breast augmentation surgery, the body naturally forms a healing capsule around each implant. This capsule is a normal part of recovery and helps stabilize the implant within the breast.

In some patients, controlled implant mobility exercises may help maintain flexibility of the implant pocket during the healing process. A soft and flexible capsule allows the implant to move naturally with changes in body position and may contribute to a softer breast feel.

These exercises are intended to support normal healing, not to force the implants into an unnatural position.

When to Begin

Implant mobility exercises are typically introduced after the second postoperative visit, often around one week after surgery. However, the timing varies depending on your surgical technique, implant placement, and individual healing progress.

Do not begin massage exercises until you have received specific instructions from your surgeon.

Recommended Frequency

  • Two complete cycles per session.
  • Three sessions per day unless otherwise instructed.
  • Hold each stretch position for approximately 10 seconds.
  • Continue as directed by your surgeon.

As healing progresses and the implants settle naturally, the frequency of some exercises may be gradually reduced.

Exercise 1: Implant Roll and Downward Displacement

Breast augmentation recovery exercise showing upward implant mobility and downward displacement massage performed after surgery.

Postoperative Rehabilitation Diagram: Tissue Mobility and Displacement Exercises

This exercise is designed to maintain implant mobility during the early healing period and help preserve flexibility within the implant pocket.

Step 1

Starting Position

Remove your bra and place your open palm directly beneath the breast.

Step 2

Upward Implant Roll

Roll your palm upward firmly against the chest wall, allowing the implant to move upward.

This is a rolling movement rather than a lifting movement. You may notice increased fullness in the upper portion of the breast and a feeling of tightness during the stretch.

Step 3

Downward Displacement

Gently displace the implant downward and hold the position for approximately 10 seconds.

The downward movement is equally important and helps maintain balanced implant mobility as healing progresses.

Some patients may notice a subtle sensation of the implant moving against the chest wall during early recovery. This is generally normal when the exercise is performed correctly.

Exercise 2: Medial Implant Mobility Exercise

Breast augmentation recovery exercise demonstrating gentle inward implant mobility and medial displacement massage.

Postoperative Rehabilitation Diagram: Medial Implant Mobility Exercise

This exercise focuses on maintaining mobility of the inner implant pocket and encouraging flexibility of the tissues surrounding the implant.

Step 1

Starting Position

Place both palms gently on the outer sides of the breasts.

Step 2

Gentle Medial Displacement

Apply gentle inward pressure toward the center of the chest.

The goal is to encourage implant mobility and stretch the medial portion of the capsule without using excessive force.

Step 3

Maintain Position

Hold the stretch briefly while maintaining gentle inward displacement.

This exercise may help support natural implant positioning and tissue adaptation during recovery.

Helpful Tips

  • Perform the exercises in front of a mirror whenever possible.
  • Use gentle, controlled movements.
  • Avoid aggressive pushing or squeezing.
  • A small amount of moisturizer or body lotion may improve comfort during massage.
  • Stop if you experience significant pain.
  • Follow your surgeon's instructions regarding duration and frequency.

Important Safety Information

Not every breast augmentation patient should perform implant mobility exercises.

These exercises are most commonly recommended for selected patients with submuscular implants. Performing inappropriate massage techniques or using excessive force may increase the risk of implant malposition.

Always follow the specific recommendations provided by your surgeon.

When to Contact Evita Clinic

Important Note

Implant mobility exercises are intended to support recovery and maintain flexibility of the implant pocket. These exercises should always be performed gently and only when recommended by your surgeon. Recovery instructions may differ depending on implant placement, surgical technique, and individual healing characteristics.
